Why us

Between two extremes.

You've got the old-school spit-and-sawdust gyms, proper kit, proper atmosphere, but often grim, intimidating, and built for people who already know what they're doing.

Then you've got the commercial chains, clean, organised, easy to join. But the kit's cheap, the contracts are sticky, and the gym can feel like a kids' playground.

The Iron Kingdom takes the best bits of both, leaves the worst behind, and lands in the middle.

01

Proper Kit

From the hardcore side.

Two heavy-duty racks. Custom-built machines. Cable stations. Loads of free weights and bars. A full track loaded with sled, yoke, farmers handles, and sandbags. Everything a real lifter could need. All maintained. All working.

02

Clean Space

From the commercial side.

Tidy floors. Re-racked weights. Toilets that aren't a horror show. Any broken kit doesn't sit broken for long. The standard we'd want as members ourselves.

03

No Ego

What we leave behind.

No alpha bros. No intimidation. No grunting gorillas. Beginners, lifelong lifters, 16 to 80. Everyone's welcome, as long as you respect the place, the kit, and the people in it.

We're the bridge. That's the whole point of the place.

The owners

Meet Tim & Martin.

We've known each other our whole lives, same schools, same humour, same social circles. Been in business together for over a decade, years before the gym was even on the cards. Bought The Iron Kingdom together September 2019, and we've been running it side by side ever since.

Tim Beswick, co-owner, The Iron Kingdom

Tim Beswick

Co-owner · Qualified PT · Coach

40, Barnsley. Came to training properly in his early thirties when corporate life was packing him in. Muay Thai opened the door, the gym closed it on his old life. Believes the body's the start, capability's the goal. Co-bought The Iron Kingdom with Martin in 2019 because chain gyms didn't get it. Coaches on the gym floor and online, Barnsley to the other side of the world. Brings Rebel, the Chihuahua-Yorkshire cross, in most weekdays. Members reckon Rebel runs the place.

Martin Lever, co-owner, The Iron Kingdom

Martin Lever

Co-owner · Qualified PT · Coach

39, also Barnsley. Caught World's Strongest Man on TV at ten and decided lifting weird stuff for a living looked ideal. Bro splits through his twenties until proper strength training clicked. Never wanted to work for someone else. Co-bought The Iron Kingdom with Tim in 2019. Coaches anyone who wants to be better than yesterday, first-timer or veteran. Reckons you're never too old to start something new. Rebuilds cars from the ground up in his off time. Brings Dotty, the Cockapoo, in every day.

Two mates running it side-by-side.

The gym mascots

Oh, and meet the dogs.

Rebel, Tim's Chihuahua-Yorkshire cross, unofficial gym mascot

Rebel

Tim's Chihuahua-Yorkshire cross.

Small, opinionated, cheeky. Strong views on the rower, no fear of dropping plates. Members reckon Rebel runs the place. We don't disagree.

Dotty, Martin's Cockapoo, unofficial gym mascot

Dotty

Martin's Cockapoo.

All curls, all charm. Greets you at the gate with her favourite toy, follows Martin around for moral support. The world's most enthusiastic gym dog.

Also on the team

David. The weekend manager.

David, weekend cover at The Iron Kingdom

David

Weekend manager · Saturdays & Sundays.

The face you'll see at the desk on a weekend. Member sign-ins, kit tidy-up, daft chat, David keeps the place running while Tim and Martin take a breather. Properly into his food and cooking. Expect to catch him eating something decent between sign-ins.

Also under the roof

Gav, Infinity Sports Massage

Infinity Sports Massage

Gav · Sports massage & injury therapy · Independent, book direct.

Sports massage and injury therapy out of the treatment room next door. Niggles, recovery, deep tissue, whatever you need. Not Iron Kingdom staff, not part of your membership, but part of the team and members rate him highly. Outside the room he's into motorbikes and Hyrox events.

The rules

House rules.

Six rules. That's it. Stick to these and we're sorted.

01

Sign in upstairs.

Every visit, every time. Helps us know who's in the building. No exceptions.

02

Train in clean footwear.

Outdoor boots leave the floor a mess. Trainers only, bring them in a bag if you've walked over.

03

Re-rack your dumbbells.

If you can lift it, you can put it back. Same goes for the bench you slid across the floor.

04

Unload your plates.

Not on the machine. Not scattered on the floor. Back on the rack where you found them.

05

All rubbish in the bins.

Bottles, wraps, sweat towels, whatever. In the bin where it belongs. Keep the space clean.

06

Respect other members.

Help each other. Don't hassle each other. Common sense, but worth saying out loud.

Stick to these and we'll all get on. Simple as.
